The Toronto Central Prison Chapel. Perched behind Liberty Village Park, this Roman Catholic chapel, built in 1877 by inmates, remains the very last structure from the original Toronto Central Prison.

A Protected Landmark, Not a Condo in Disguise

Let’s address the concern that’s been on many minds—will this heritage gem ever become another high-rise, blocking lights, iconic views, and the soul of the neighbourhood? Not on our watch.

• Heritage status is iron-clad: The chapel has been officially designated a heritage property (since 1985 under City of Toronto bylaws) and is protected from demolition.
• No condo conversion is planned—or even viable. The building’s heritage designation, its structural requirements, and its existing parkland setting make condo development out of the question.
• Current plans, led by the Pegasus Group, aim to restore and adapt the chapel into a public art gallery, complete with a small café and meeting space—not condos.

So yes—rest easy. The chapel’s cultural and architectural significance continues to be honoured, and it will not become a condo development.

A Little History

Built in 1877 as part of the Toronto Central Prison, the chapel stood witness to the labour-driven era that shaped Liberty Village. When the prison closed in 1915, most buildings disappeared—but the chapel survived, woven into the Inglis factory for decades and ultimately turning into parkland.
